Concerts for the second anniversary of John Paul II’s death
Concerts for the second anniversary of John Paul II’s death The celebrations of the anniversary of John Paul II’s death will start on 31 March with opening of photography exhibition entitled “I Was Looking For You And Now You Came To Me” at the John Paul II Centre at Kanonicza 18. Over the next two days, Krakow will be filled with music devoted to the memory of the Pope.

1 APRIL
Concert by the Camerata Choir conducted by Izabela Szota. The concert will present 17th c. Polish music accompanied by readings from texts written by John Paul II. The musicians will also include: Konrad Szota (baritone), Katarzyna Puch (soprano), Aleksandra Szota (violin) and Bogumiła Gizbert-Studnicka (piano).
St. Nicholas Church, Kopernika 9, 3.30 pm (after the 3 pm service). Admission free.

John Paul II – Santo Subito concert in the Wieliczka Salt Mine will present the most magnificent pieces of vocal-instrumental and instrumental sacred and classical music. Also John Paul II’s poetry will be read, and Karol Wojtyła’s friends from the Teatr Rapsodyczny will recall anecdotes from the Pope’s life. The invited artists include: Ewa Warta-Śmietana (soprano), Danuta Śmietana-Kurasiewicz (violin), Alicja Węgorzewska-Whiskerd (mezzosoprano), Mariusz Godlewski (baritone) and Małgorzata Westrych (piano).

2 APRIL
Be Not Afraid – concert by the Krakow Opera, featuring compositions by Wojciech Kilar. Victoria is a composition for a mixed choir and an orchestra, which had its premiere in 1983. It marks two events of Polish history – the 300th anniversary of the Vienna Battle and the second pilgrimage of John Paul II to Poland. Magnificat, a 2006 composition is a hymn of thanks to the Lord, by which the artist renews the age-old tradition of composing music to the Magnificat text in the St. Luke’s Gospel . The concert will feature Krakow Opera soloists. The Krakow Opera Orchestra and Choir and the F. Chopin State Secondary General Music School will be conducted by Piotr Sułkowski.
The Opera Stage of the Słowacki Theatre, pl. św. Ducha 1, 6.30 pm. Tickets PLN 100 (VIP)/50/40/30 available at the theatre box office.
Tu es Petrus – at 7 pm in the Market Square, the popular oratory by Piotr Rubik and Zbigniew Książek will be heard. The concert organised by the Krakow Festival Bureau will feature the choir of the Świętokrzyska Academy Institute of Music Education, the Fermata Chamber Choir, the Świętokrzyska Philharmonics Oskar Kolberg Symphonic Orchestra in Kielce, and soloists: Joanna Słowińska, Olga Szomańska, Małgorzata Markiewicz, Janusz Radek, Przemysław Branny, Maciej Miecznikowski and Igor Michalski. The concert will follow Holy Mass at SS. Peter and Paul’s church at 5 pm; at 9.30 pm, a vigil will start under the Pope’s window at Franciszkańska.

Krakow Chamber Ensemble Concert under the direction of Łukasz Mikołaj Mateja with the participation of soloists – Agnieszka Monasterska (alto) and Arkadiusz Krupa (oboe) on the occasion of the 800th anniversary of the Rule of Carmel and the second anniversary of John Paul II’s death. The main feature will be a performance of Vivaldi’s Stabat Mater. The program will also include compositions by Johann Sebastian Bach, Bernadetto Marcello and Antonio Vivaldi. The actress Anna Polony will recite excerpts of religious poetry and selected texts by John Paul II.
The Carmelite "Na Piasku" Basilica, Karmelicka 19, 8 pm. Admission free.
