The custom of carnival celebrations stems from the ancient holiday which was to restore the world's order and lend it power.
To be honest, Carnival in Krakow does not principally have such fancy ambitions but, judging by its rich programme, it will definitely bear the fruit of positive energy for the remaining days of the year.
The new project of the Krakow Festival Office not only promotes the carnival tradition, but also attempts to include the inhabitants and tourists in active entertainment. Parades dazzling with a riot of colours, processions of costumed people, masked balls, concerts, special film showings, fashion shows, performances and exhibitions – all this during the event planned for eleven days. Numerous cultural institutions are engaged in the enterprise, which promises entertainment dedicated for a wide range of audiences available in various city districts.
Music lovers will be delighted by two interesting concerts with the participation of Sinfonietta Cracovia: CAROLS OF OLGA BOŃCZYK and TANGO – MY LOVE which will be held on 29 and 30 January in the Krakow Philharmonic. On 1 February you can listen to the OBLIGATO Galician Strauss Orchestra. The musicians' performance will be enriched by large projections on the walls of St Joseph's Church.
For dance lovers we especially recommend the open-air dance performances of Cracovia Danza the Court Ballet. The fashion for masquerade (according to Italian examples) was introduced to Poland by Queen Bona. The entertainment in the Polish courts during the Golden Age will be presented, for example, by the performance entitled CARNIVAL IN WAWEL on 26 January in pl. Szczepański. During the show you can see processions with the masks of muses and monsters patterned upon the grotesque heads of the Cloth Hall, a jester's dance with sticks or a court version of blind man's buff. A day later on the same spot will be the OLD-POLISH CARNIVAL, and on 2 February in Rynek Podgórski will be the KRAKOW BALL where you can admire waltzes, lancers and quadrilles performed by dancers in retro-style ball outfits; after the show the audience will be invited to join in. The performance entitled CARNIVAL FIGHTING LENT will certainly be an important event; it will be held on 27 January in the Korona hall; the choreography is prepared by Ewa Wycichowska (Polish Dance Theatre in Poznań).
For movie fans there will be special reviews of films related to the carnival subject-matter (in the Sfinks and Wrzos cinemas).
Since the Carnival falls into the period of winter holidays, there is a special offer for children. On 27 January C.K. Norwid Cultural Centre) will hold the FAIRY-TALE BALL WITH THE SNOW QUEEN, and on 4 and 5 February the Groteska Theatre will present performances entitled: A Tale about Little Shoemaker, Songs from Little Red Riding Hood and Acting Episodes on the Moomin Stage. Additionally, you can visit an exhibition entitled Stage secrets and participate in theatrical workshops.
What also promises to be original is the opening CARNIVAL PARADE of the KTO Theatre (on 26 January, along the main streets of Kraków) and the PODGÓRZE PROCESSION WITH PERFORMANCES (Polish: BREWERIA) IN THE BACKGROUND which belongs to the Podgórze district part of the enterprise (2 February, Piłsudski bridge, streets of Podgórze district).
The admittance to the events within the carnival is free or in the form of a token charge. Free invitations to the events taking place in closed rooms will be distributed from 21 January at the City Information Network.
We invite you to join the fun!
