WHATS NEW - Cracow Screen Festival

Cracow Screen Festival

04/30/2008

During the first weekend in May, the centre of Krakow will be transformed into an art arena, combining music and image. More than ten alternative music performers will appear on two stages located in Jan Nowak Jeziorański and Szczepański Squares. The concerts will be accompanied by multimedia presentations prepared by video artists.

Bryan Ferry will be one of the biggest stars of the festival (4 May). The British musician, before embarking on his solo career, set up the famous Roxy Music together with Brian Eno. This will be the first performance that both Ferry and Juliette Lewis (who will open the festival) give in Poland (2 May). Juliette and the Licks, a band created by Juliette Lewis in 2003, was a surprise for the followers of the film career of the American actress, whose roles in "Cape Fear” (Academy Award nomination) and "Natural Born Killers" have become intrinsic elements of world cinematography.

The performance of the Danish band The Raveonettes will be closest to the festival's concept (2 May). Thus far, the duo, made up of Sune Rose Wagner (guitar, vocals) and Sharin Foo, have recorded 4 CDs and received acclaim on the part of critics for its interesting development of the new rock revolution towards sounds closer to the Velvet Underground.
A show of representatives of the British electronic stage will be a special treat for those members of the audience who delight in dance floor rhythms. Underworld (3 May) is one of the veterans of music. It has been making music since the 1980s, choosing sounds from the borderline between techno, house and ambient style. Thanks to their appearance in Danny Boyle's "Trainspotting" (1996), the group has acquired plenty of fans. The Mattafix Band, another visiting performer from the Isles, is known among the young audience mainly for its "Big City Light" hit, which perfectly fits the Hawaii expression "Matted fixed" (No problem) – the inspiration for the group's name. The following complete the foreign guest list: the trip-hop cirKus with Neneh Cherry, Krakow (Belgium) operating in the aesthetics of down-tempo and the indie-rock Slut (Germany).

As far as the visual aspect of the May weekend is concerned, the figure of Floria Sigismondi seems to attract most attention. The artist's video-installations will jazz up both the space below the stage and the surroundings of the Old Town. The presence of the Canadian artist is not coincidental. Her portfolio includes video clips prepared for the top pop culture artists (David Bowie, Marylin Manson, Björk, Amon Tobin, Interpol and Christina Aguilera). The list of Polish guests invited to Cracow Screen Festival includes, among others, Wilki, Pustki, CKOD, Muchy, Paprika Korps and Smolik. The first edition of the festival is the first outpost of the "6 Senses" project, created to promote Krakow and the large events organised in the city.
