Genealogy for Everybody

10/26/2005

„Poszukiwanie przodków” (“Pursuit of Ancestors”) is the first guidebook on our market, for persons looking for their non-noble roots. The book explains how, on the basis of generally available documents, to recreate one’s family history hundreds of years into the past. It also teaches how to use archives, demonstrates the main paths of genealogical search, assists in reading both old documents and the Internet resources. It has been enriched with genealogical forms, relationship charts, illustrations and dictionaries, thus being a complete handbook necessary for starting and conducting successful search.
The woman-author, a genetic specialist from McMaster University, Hamilton, refers to the book as the monument to the memory of her peasant ancestors.

Małgorzata Nowaczyk interviewed by Katarzyna Fortuna

Małgorzata Nowaczyk was born in Gliwice. Her parents – a result of typical post-war population mixing – came from the surroundings of Lvov and Poznań, but they met in Silesia. As early as a primary school student, she drew her first genealogical tree, but this was the only such action in 25 years' time. In a meantime she received a degree in biochemistry and medicine at the University of Toronto in Canada, specialized in pediatrics, clinical genetics and genetic metabolism disorders at Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto and Hospital Necker Enfant Malades in Paris, became an assistant professor at McMaster University, married a Canadian of Greek origin and gave birth to two sons. It was during her maternity leave, in January 2002, when she started her genealogical pursuit and it turned out there was no hope for her - she became completely absorbed by the genealogical craze.

Currently, when she in not browsing through microfilms at the local branch of the Mormon Church or not working upon the history of her family, she works as a manager of the Genetics Clinic at McMaster University in Hamilton and as assistant professor at the chair of pathology and molecular medicine at the chair of pediatrics or runs clinical research on clinical genetics. She is an author or co-author of 50 papers published in prestigious scientific periodicals.
